Rising and Falling Thought Meditation

Many may consider this meditation advanced, but this is the starting point for those aligning to their highest.

This meditation is an observation of thoughts rising and falling. The goal is to sit in stillness, and not engage thoughts. Focus on not attaching or vibrationally matching the thought noticed. This takes practice and skill. The first time someone tries this practice they may succeed in not touching a thought for 10-30 seconds. The more this is practiced, the more space is put between the observer and what is being observed. It will appear as though the thoughts are coming from further away.

For this meditation:

  1. Set a timer for two minutes

  2. Observe thoughts as they rise and fall until the timer ends

  3. Set another timer for two minutes

  4. Journal what was experienced during the observation of thoughts rising and falling

  5. Repeat steps 1-4 three to six times

The benefit of meditation occurs during and especially after the meditation in everyday life. It is after the practice that the understanding occurs.

It is important to develop the skill of mental noting. During the meditation only observe and do not engage the thoughts. Note thoughts as they rise and fall mentally. Be attentive to which thoughts break concentration.

During the journaling portion of this meditation, be sure to maintain a high-quality dialogue. Write everything that was mentally noted, What did the thought feel like? Was it electric? Was it magnetic? What did it look like? What did it feel like? Was there an emotion that was tied to the thought?

Separating the observed and the observer will overflow into everyday life. It will give freedom of choice. This mediation allows a deep understanding of how the subconscious, the spirit, functions. For example, if one is walking and comes across someone who greets them, one waves, smiles and greets them back all while observing their thoughts rise and fall. They can decide to keep the subconscious act of returning the greeting, which would limit the freedom of choice as it is the learned and repeated reaction to a greeting. From the observing mind, one may choose to dissolve or change their reaction.  Operating from the observing mind gives freedom of choice. This is a mundane example, but this practice allows deep mindfulness and understanding.

If one is completely one hundred percent concentrated on a single focus, and a thought can break this focus. Note how much this may impact everyday life. Note the effect consciously and subconsciously the effect. This highlights the importance of developing this practice. This is the basis and foundation of hermetics and alchemy.

Continue practicing this meditation frequently throughout the day. The benefits will arise quickly, especially with high-quality journaling.
